Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory |
Enemy Territory is all the glory of Wolfenstein multiplayer only different and with some more, yet with some less. It retains enough to be familiar and it also manages to add some things that just don't sit well with avid players of the original. When coupled together, the changes, additions, and combination of newness/familiarity (like playing a sequel to a beloved game) are compelling reasons to invest time in play, but won't be enough to convince the invisible girlfriend that she needs to provide more space and time to allow for a little unadulterated Battlefield action on the weekends. It's the slick allure of squad-based action, for sure, but it's so little, and so much like its progenitor in so many different ways, that when taken as a product on its own, it will certainly be passed by in a matter of days or even weeks. Those days, though...hot damn will they be fun.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars |
The year is 2065. The Strogg race has attacked Earth in order to process its raw materials into a fuel called stroyent. If you've played any other Quake titles, you'll know some of the history here, but it's mostly irrelevant in the context of Enemy Territory's multiplayer action, so let's cut to the chase: You join either the human Global Defense Force or the alien Strogg team, and then shoot your enemies in the face.
Quake Wars' strong shooting model and focused objectives make it a lot of fun to play.

Counter-Strike: Source |
A remake/update of the original Counter-Strike, running on the Half-Life 2 Source engine. This title was made available through Valve's Steam downloading service in October of 2004, with a retail release in the Fall of 2005.
With a full complement of real world pistols, rifles and shotguns, Counter-Strike's battle of terrorists and counter-terrorists became the basic blueprint for many modern team-based online shooters. Now enhanced with the power of the Source engine, the game features drastically improved visuals, enhancements on classic maps, offline skirmish play with AI bots and more.

Call of Duty 2 |
Call of Duty 2 is a title that many may feel is redundant in a genre quickly becoming clogged with WWII-style shooters. However, the additions that it makes to the genre are substantial. Smoke, and using it effectively, as well as an open-mission style seem to be extremely positive and hopefully will show up in future titles. While not a “must have” for all gamers alike, if you enjoyed the last Call of Duty you're going to want to play through this one as well. It's a worthwhile and well done sequel and as such can stand on it's own as one of the great games to be released this year.

Heroes of Newerth from Savage creator S2 Games is the next online game to try to succeed the DOTA mod. The game is apparently taking the approach of trying to re-create the authentic feel of the DOTA mod while updating the graphics. Much of the interface and gameplay seems to stay very true to the...
